Wesco and Kenton Brothers: A Day at Powder Creek Sporting Clays
By David Strickland, COO of Kenton Brothers
There are few places where a team of security professionals feels equally at home as they do on a sporting clays course. Recently, Kenton Brothers Systems for Security had the privilege of spending a memorable day at Powder Creek Sporting Clays in Lenexa, Kansas, courtesy of our Prime Partners at Wesco, with proud sponsorship from Axis Communications.
The event brought together a strong cross-section of the KB team: technicians who spend their days in the field making systems sing, sales professionals building relationships across Kansas City, and operations leaders keeping the whole engine running smoothly. Seeing all three disciplines represented so well made it clear that events like this are about more than just clay pigeons and competition.
Powder Creek: The Facility
Powder Creek is a world-class facility, and it set the stage perfectly for a day that was equal parts competitive, educational, and just plain fun. Whether you stepped onto the course as a seasoned shooter or picked up a shotgun for the very first time, the atmosphere was welcoming and the instruction was outstanding. Safety was front and center at every station, which is something this team naturally appreciates.
“A safe range and a competitive field is a pretty good metaphor for how we like to work. You take care of the fundamentals, keep your team sharp, and you show up ready.”
The sporting clays format kept things lively. Unlike a static shooting range, sporting clays sends targets flying in unpredictable patterns that mimic real game birds in flight. Every station presented a new challenge, which kept everyone engaged and on their toes across the entire course. There was friendly trash talk. There were improbable shots that drew genuine cheers. And there were plenty of missed clays (that will never be spoken of again.)
Relationships Matter
What made the day truly stand out was the quality of the company. Wesco has been an outstanding partner to Kenton Brothers, and events like this are a testament to the kind of relationship we’ve built together. This is not a transactional relationship; it is a genuine collaboration between teams who respect one another and invest in each other’s success.
Axis Communications deserves a special callout as well. Their sponsorship of the event reflects the same spirit of partnership and investment in relationships that defines the best vendors in the physical security space. Axis has long been a cornerstone of KB’s product portfolio, and having them as a sponsor for an event like this feels entirely fitting.
At the end of the day, with the last clay broken and the scorecards put away, what lingered was something harder to quantify than score totals: a shared experience. The KB team spent a day in fresh air, competing and laughing alongside industry partners who have become something closer to friends. That kind of connection makes every project smoother, every phone call warmer, and every challenge easier to face together.
Thank you!
We look forward to this event every single year. If the invitation arrives and you are on the KB team, you clear your calendar. Simple as that.
A heartfelt thank you to Wesco for making it happen and to Axis Communications for their generous support. We will see everyone back at the range, hopefully sooner as opposed to later.
